Hi Newbee, I am still an amateur by choice and I got into providing and engineering my own PA as a hobby, for some friends of mine who were starting a band. Since then, I have built up my sound and stage lighting rigs and use them for several local bands, as well as my own and for charity music festivals. Basically, to mix a live rock band, you firstly have to persuade the guitarists to keep their back line at a reasonable level. The idea, is for you to have as much control as possible for the FOH sound. The vocals need to be clearly heard just above all else that's going on. The drum kit needs to be well defined with a good kick punch. Each instrument can be given it's own space in the mix, using EQ and panning. Providing that the FOH is EQ'd to the room prior to mixing, obtaining a well balanced mix, with a good mixer, outboard and amp/speaker system, is a pleasant art form. You can only learn the craft by experience, so starting with local band's that appreciate any help and won't get too annoyed if you are doing your best, is a good way to go. You will know when you have got it right, when the audience reaction, feeds the band's egos and brings out their best performances. John.
