What the **** are you serious astoria yes but LA2 has got to be the worst sounding venue around i cant belive mean fiddler or (Clear channle) actually charge people to see bands there, have you ever seen a band in that room its awfull and its not down to the engineer but to the room and the speaker layout, 2 hanging highs and the subs in the corners. you can only get a decent sound in the middle of the room but what good is that when thats a one person spot,

Thankfully iv never done the LA2 but have spoke to alot of other touring engineers who said its a really tough room to work with and no matter how hard you try your never able to get it quite right and get the result.
Would like to give it a go though. I love a chalenge!

oooh sorry 'holds up handbag' I thought the question was whats the best venue? no-one said anything about the sound quality! Saw wishbone ash (la2) there a couple of years ago, and I like the place 'cos its got a nice relaxed atnmosphere. twas the only reason. i havent a clue what venue has the best 'sound'. I certainly wouldnt like to be the sound guy tho'. so LEEROY. Did you mean BEST SOUNDING or BEST as in overall? (for goodness sake)

Well the best venue with the worst sound is the National Maritime Museum followed closely by the Natural History Museum-possibly the largest delay unit in the western hemisphere but great dinosaurs[the band were a posh old function band]. I once did a gig at Madame Tussauds where I knocked over Gandhi and had a conversation with Simon Cowell by mistake but I don't wish to wax lyrical all day. The worst venue with the worst sound is a very oversubscribed category with many venues buying cheap plastic 200 watt speakers and installing them in the most inappropiate place and buying cheap powered monitors which end up in the cupboard after blowing up at the second "live band night". One venue in Shoreditch have wall bar fire heaters which they use as stage lights[even in summer] and cobble all the long benches together as a stage.Cheap as chips. There is a pub in commercial road which has a back bar/hall where the illuminated 1970's flashing light dance floor is about to fall into the basement.

Yes, I agree with the Astoria. My favorite gig there was THUNDER, when they headlined there a while back. I stood next to the sound booth on the lower steps and the sound was amazing. There was a capacity crowd there and everyone, including the band, were well up for it. My worst nightmare gig , was being talked into seeing Motorhead at Hammersmith. Even with ear protection, it was a crushing sound. The PA was like two houses, with a bottom end like an atomic weapon. It was OK until after the first couple of numbers when Lemmy shouted, " right lets crank this M****R F****R up". It was like having your chest sledge-hammered.

thats why mr kilminster is deaf no doubt! The guy that normally does metallica's sound says he's the ghhardest guy to work with because he has about 10Kw of monitoring!!!

The best venues are the ones with the best crew. It does not matter what the rig is so much as if the house engineer is friendly and up for helping you do what you need to do to get your band on stage. Unfortunately this is not always the case and the gig is always so much harder. I would rather work with a cheap PA built by someone who doesn't have too much knowledge but is good natured, easy going and accomodating than a great rig set up by someone less accomodating.
