Still on the lookout to buy a new desk- wondering if anyone has any experience of the following digi-desks at all? Tascam DM4800 Yamaha LS9 Mackie DXB200 currently trying to make my mind up between the LS9 and the Tascam. Its mainly going to be used on the road, and a recording capability will be good. comments, abuse? LOL.

Hey Jim. I personally would rather an analogue desk over a digital any day but i have used lots of digital desks as foh and monitors on tour and the best one i have come across for sound, price and size is the Yamaha M7CL.
They have stacks of very good onboard effects and gates/comps and graphic EQs and iv found that digital desks are really let down on the pre-amps but was plesently suprised by this console.
You should check it out!

i would say the the LS9 is very good value for money however the preamps on it are complete rubbish which is a shame because it ruins an otherwise excellent desk

Jim...... had Yammy rep in ESL last week doing LS9 demo........... i didnt get to see it coz i was out working, but Nigel was suitably impressed to probably order 1 for a new rack we're about to build. Speak to Nige for more details on it. I know someone in C'ford with a Mackie TT24 - i could probably blag for a day if thats any help. Regards, Steve.

With regards to the LS 9 preamps look at that bit I posted in The Wharehouse. Treat them much more gently than an analogue desk and they are fine. Keep it in the green not the orange. You have to rethink how you use gain structure and find the gain everywhere, not just at the beginning. Don't get the 16, however. It is more difficult to use because of the the restricted number of channels and simply does not have enough outputs to be useful. 8 IN TOTAL! That is a bit rubbish really. Apart from that, not bad for a budget desk. As previously mentioned, the M7CL is a much better desk.

Also the MP3 record/replay from a USB key is a good feature. You can use the "User defined" buttons to play them, if you want. You could record the band and flog the recording at the end of the show! Easier to do than making CD's.

all recieved and understood. I know its a budget desk BUT it will teach me to drive digital AND i won't have to lug all the outboard around. I was thinking of the bigger one definately - and i wont be getting the M7CL because its just far too expensive for me at the moment. Would love one, can't afford it yet. S'why i asked about the tascam - 24 channels and aboot £4000 ish. Anyway i quite like yammy gear - i used to have an FJR1300 super tourer up until 2 years ago when i threw it up the M25 and broke 7 ribs. Ouch.

The LS9 is a very good board for the money. You may want to use an outboard pre amp on lead vocal channel but other than that its OK. You do need to keep your input levels down and bring the level up on the master fader as the summing bus runs out of headroom quickley.
The D5 is my favorite digital console to mix on. Though the PM5D and the M7CL are both pretty smooth. Just not nearly as nice (fluidity of use and sound quality) as the Digico. But then it does cost HUGELY more.

...of course the LS9 also shares virtually the same software as the M7CL. just no touch screen sadly

I find that the only digital desks that don't sprout layers of tape when I'm using them are the PM5D , D5 etc where you can properly label each individual channel.
I find tape on an M7 etc really speed up the mixing process.
I have found the screens on all the Yamaha desks to be perfectly visible outside, the only exception being the LS9 and thats because I haven't used it outdoors yet.
