...thinking of buying one of these, so i can leave visiting engineer / dj's to their own devices and not worry about my speakers! Blown three tweeters in six months at £70 each so one of these would pay for itself in a year! what you lot reckon? If it works like it says it does, it would keep my ears / the venue owners / local authority / casino upstairs very happy indeed. they might even put some money towards it!!! link formula-sound.co.uk/products/avc2/bidding on one on ebay at the moment

i have one, VERY good equipment. doesnt effect the system at all soundwise, just reduces volume, doesnt clip ect... i wouldnt buy one new however, ebay they tend to popup once a fortnight from ex installs, fetching around £150-200 max unless a muppet starts bidding. for leaving with guests on your install, use the wired version as the XLR version is easily bypassed by simply kniping out the in and out and plugging them together. id recommend you use it regardless of the system user, stops accidental damage from knocking up faders accidently, getting pissed and thinking 'i can get a few more DB out of that ect...'. www.speakerplans.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8700&KW=AVC2&PID=77789#77789good luck, Pat

well!
it seems to work, but im not totally convinced - it might just be the fact that i haven't set it up properly. It definitely works but its going to take some loud tests in an empty club on an afternoon!
also im thinking i am going to put it in the rack in the booth, in the chain before the crossover. that way if i need to adjust it i can - if i put it in the amp rack its going to be a four-handed job

couldn't you just set limits on your crossover?

the AVC2 is much much more advanced than limiting/compressing, they attenuate it instead.
limiters and compressers tend to loose dynamic range, easily clip and generally sound rubbish (and when pushed enough can still allow speakers to blow).
the avc2 maintains the full dynamic input at the set maximum level, and thats what u get, a full mix at a set level.

that is very true, but then any piece of equipment is capable of sounding rubbish and easily clipping, it just depends on the quality of the equipment being used. Also of course reducing output in any fashion can reduce dynamic range. But I cant say that i have ever actually used this before, im sure it's a usful unit though. have you had any joy with it yet jim?

OK!! i fitted it in.
IT WORKS!!
Now if the volume gets turned up too loud, after about 2 seconds it very gradually turns down the volume. Its almost unnoticable. Brilliant. When the fader is returned to normal level, the level corrects itself so you just hear a bit of a reduction then its back to normal. Its almost transparent in action. Well worth £155!
