Ok, quite a few jobs coming up for me up town soon so im looking for a nice 16 channel portable desk and a gadget that does everything in 1 or 2 u of rack space!!! Basically ive got to travel train wise to these gigs and although the venue has wedges, amps, FOH speakers et al, theres no outboard or desk; so i've been drafted in to do foh and supply desk/ob.
basically i need to get at least 4 channels of eq, at least 2 compressors, a couple of gates and perhaps some digi fx and bung it all in a rack bag as iv'e got to carry it all on the train. any suggestions?
what about desk choice? I'm a bit of a soundcraft man so i was thinking of an old spirit folio about 12 chans upward. what do u guys reccomend? Bearing in mind im a wuss and need to carry it on the train!

mixer-wise i think im looking at a spirit fx16, M12 or spirit sx if i'm honest. Dont suppose i'll be needing more than 2 monitor mixes at these small venues but the sx has an extra monitor output which could be handy if i needed one more - fx16 has built in lexicon fx, so that saves on the gadgets; M12 is nice and compact and probably the lightest of the three. hmmmm....

May I suggest an 01v96?
Seems like a one box solution if you can use a parametric on the outputs as opposed to a graphic.

Ive used its big brother (DM2K) and its wicked! Why don't you download studio manager for 01v96? It gives you a pretty good idea of what the desk is capable of.

i will. in fact-im getting a price on a 96 right now. so far ive got it down to £1220. Can ayone get it cheaper!! rofl. Looks like im going to buy it, reading good reviews on the net!! (and i just won a folio sx for £77 on ebay!!) As long as i can get a nice sturdy flight case to go with the 96 im rocking.

Jim we use Tapco squeeze's they take up one rack space(two screw holes) and are two channel with a compressor and a built in gate.

bit like the multigate i got but with less channels! cheers; though i really think i'm looking at the digi-desk for now. the less i can carry the better. regarding parametrics as opposed to 31 banders - i recently did THE OTHERS with only a graphic in the aux sends for the monitors - to my suprise i actually got away without having to tweak the vocal channels too much - which proves that modern mikes and speakers are gradually doing away with the need to eq too heavily.

Your sorted then! I suppose if you need a graphic you could get an ultracurve. If its only for your use get a flightcase with a pull out (suitcase styley) handle,It'll make traveling on the train much easier.

URGH not an ultracurve. i spent bloody days trying to make one of those work and it turned out to only have 3 feedback kill frequencies per side and it never really worked properly trying to eq the room with noise - ended up selling it becuase it was so hard to operate - all those flippin' menu's and no knobs to get hold of if you got into trouble!!!
like the idea of a pull-out - i think yolu can buy them seperately and just screw them to the back of the case - hmmm, i wonder how heavy these 96's are?

Heavy enough I wouldn't want to carry it! Did you have problems with a new curve or an old one?

Not a fan of the 01V96. Too d**n fiddly especially for those unfamiliar with it. Too many layers, too many button pushes to get to where you want. This is NOT a live console for one reason - it takes too d**n long to do anything on it.
The DM1000 is way better for live work. Did a gig on a DM2000 last night (with a loveley D&B C4 rig and a Steinway - gorgeous) and that was absolutely fine. No problems navigating round it having not used it before. I am more familiar with the M7CL and the PM5D - great desks.
Rather than the 01v, check out Yamaha's new digital live desks - don't know the model number. As they have been designed for the live market, the should be easy to use on the fly. Pretty cheap too.
As for things that do stuff in 1 u, I have just been lent an Alesis DEQ to try. 8 channels of 31 band GEQ in 1U! very simple to operate, just press the select button under each freq and turn the dial, just like the eaarly KT digital graphics.
Rumour has it that Behringer are developing an 8 channel digital dynamics rack - again in 1U. Should be worth a look, some of their digital stuff is quite good.
