Hi, been a while since i was last on here, been busy working with a band round the clubs.
I have been given quite a big sum of money to get a lighting rig up and running and I have everything sorted to buy from Thomann but I need to know about DMX cables. Can you use standard XLR or put them through a spare channel on multi core. Something seems 2 tell me thats a big NO NO but hey you never know untill you ask lol.
Also I take it no matter what I have i need a DMX terminator?
Thanks
Phil

standard 3pin lighting DMX is same the microphone XLR's. You can use them to link lighting and desks ect, and yes, you can use a multicore return for them.
you do not always need a dmx terminator, it all depends on what your using, most modern dmx devices do it automatically inside the unit. try it and you shall find out! Most dimmer packs are fine to go without!

No there not the same!
Its all about impedance!
Terminatition is a black art.........................

Yes,but its taking a chance.
Or use proper DMX cabling and know it will work

all our dmx leads are of the 5 pin variety - converted to 3 pin xlr at the end, then all the rest of the leads are good quality xlr cables. test them first to check there are no shorts - then terminate the final dimmer with a proper terminator - ebay, fiver!!! we have three dimmers and 20-odd cans and no problems thus far.

Thanks.
I'm getting a pritty good rig up and running soon. been given budget of £1000 to get small but effective show going. Not using par cans but 2 showtec RGB 500watt per lamp unit, 3 decent scanners with room for custom gobo, and a 3M truss stand with a white backdrop, Behringer desk, 2 uplights or possibly floor par56 to illuminate the duo's faces

i do get the occasional random light spazout, so maybe thats why after all. Ill get a terminater and see what happens. I am completely self taught so theres grey areas in my knowledge!

Dont suppose you have any chases saved you could send me at a later date please?
