I finally got around to getting some mics repaired and was amazed at some of the prices quoted from the manufacturers themselves. if your considering microphones its worth knowing that Rhode have a 10 year warranty, audio technica are very cheap to repair, i have a few pro 35's needing repairing and was quoted about £35-£45 each. A new shure sm58 and beta 58 capsule would cost more than buying a whole new microphone. tgey offered a discount on purchasing a new one off the rrp to about what you can get them new for if you shop around. I'm afraid its one more reason why i wont be considering shure microphones from now on

out of interest - what damage are we looking at here? i mean, you've got to throw a shure against a wall head-on to damage it - microphones very rarely just stop working unless the build quality was suspect in the first place - (take a bow behringer) - so i was wondering what sort of damage are we talking about? The worst damage i ever got with a shure was when it got run over in the road by a truck - and it still worked! The grille was completely squashed! I bet a Rode wouldn't after that! This could open a massive can of worms actually - obviously its down to personal preferance of course, and my eyes have been opened by some VERY nice new microphones on the market that sound just as good if not better than shure mikes (hello AKG D5) - BUT i cant stop band management demanding 58 beta's at gigs, which seem to be a regular occurrence!! Lastly - i do have an electronics background, and i've managed to fix most mikes ive been given - i also refurbish mikes - you'll be suprised what a good clean and a bit of love will do for a mike. -but shures are murder to get apart, that said. LOL. So if anyone wants mikes serviced, give 'em to me!

i had a couple of microphones dropped in very wet mud, a couple of very old 58's i guess have been too abused over time, one beta 58 i was given broken, a drum mic set with a couple damaged thanks to abusive drummers, and a couple more left out in the rain during a festival. just a nice selection thats built up over time and thought it might be time to do something about them and a couple of other pieces of equipment looked at or thrown out.
