Did monitors for a band last week whose engineer used Beyer M160 ribbons as drum "underheads", this has me intrigued, I'd never really thought of using ribbon mics live.
So...does anyone have any opinions, thoughts or experience to offer on the subject?

hello smee, fancy bumping into you, i guess its a small internet.
Cant say i've ever seen ribbon mics used live before, i always thought they were toys for the studio boys. what did you make of them?

I own a Beyer M160 and use it live all the time. It is a fantastically open mic - probably my favoutite mic for saxophone, high hats or electric guitar. Its warm sounding and has an incredibly fast transient response without the brittle quality in the treble that many condensers have. Its robust too - I have used it for three years now and it is still going strong. Don't be tempted to use it for vocals though as it won't react well to saliva. And remeber to make sure that phantom power is off otherwise you will kill it! Simon
