the microphone ideally should have as flat a response as possible, most mics have slight presences and dips through the frequency range. a couple are designed to be used with a spectrum analyzer programme. dpa are worth looking at for smooth responses. i have one from klark teknik but cant remember the model at the moment. You really need the flattest response mic you can afford. With my KT model it runs off 12v supply rather than 48 volt, something else to think about.

I use the Audix TR40 measurement mic. This is the mic that Behr*er copied when they made theirs. Unlike the cheaper copy it is fully phase coherent. You should be able to pck one up for around £100 if you look around.
Soundcard is fairly immaterial, it depends entirely what other uses you are likely to put it to. These days I use my laptop's internal soundcard and an external mixer because it provides more routing flexibility.

Just a thought, I expect most of you will have thunk it already, but if you are using a digital desk then remember to allow for the latency of the desk when doing Smaart measurements. I tend to route the mic through the desk rather than straight into my sound card to make sure that the pink and the mic signal cohere properly. If you are a Smaart 6 user have a look on the forum because a new version has just been posted.

Oh. I forgot to say. I use an Earthworks M30 and either a Digigram VX pocket V2 or an Edirol FA66 firewire.
