I used my new DBX iEQ31 for the first time at The Ruislip Social Club last Saturday, for the late Paul Fox (RUTS) annual charity gig.
Unlike my DBX224 AFS units on monitor duties, the Advanced Feedback Suppression on the iEQ31 does not have any LED's to show what the filters are doing.
I set all 12x filters on each channel to LIVE mode with the narrowest Q setting, so that I could use minimal EQ on the graphics to sort out the room acoustics and mic head-room and leave the AFS systems to control any mic feedback during the performances.
All went very well until The DAMMED (2x ex-members and 2x others) set. The guitarist did not want to turn down his flat-out 4x12 Marshall, so I had to crank the vocals to near the pain barrier to get them across.
The AFS LED on each channel continuously flickered during the vocalists death metal/acid punk performance, so I can only assume that they were cycling around all 12 filters, in a blind panic.
The Peak Stop Limiter was given a work-out during her painful screams using a mic technique similar to sword swallowing , even though I had a compressor on the insert of her vocal channel. Their fans loved it all of course.
All of the other bands, Dirty Strangers, DubCats and Moonstompers sounded superb and the rig coped perfectly.
It was the best drums sound I have ever had from my 4k FOH rig, with the 800w drum-fill heard from the FOH position, following Rat Scabies drums sound check.
I have been booked again for next year's event and the venue wants us back as well. (it was rammed with big drinkers).
I also got a big response from the audience when I got a shout from the stage by the organizer Vince and the money raised for the charity was better than expected from the door and raffle.
Myself and crew, (Andy & Bill) and all of the bands worked/performed for free and no charge was made for the venue. Success all round. John.
