A di box takes an unbalanced signal such as Bass amp line out and converts it to a balanced feed for a mixer to use. they will normally have a ground lift on them to avoid earth loop buzz and a pad switch for setting the level into the DI box so you could connect to speaker out of a amplifier. Two types are Passive which contain a transformer and not much else and the Active which contain battery or phantom powered circuitry for the signal path.
