Depends how you define expensive.
Sub £100 Behringer Virtualiser (24 bit one) Had one for 3 years, thrashed it, it still works (guess I must be very lucky) sounds OK (by that Imean I wouldn't use it for anything too critical. It is the audio equivalent of a swiss army knife. Loads of tools, great for little jobs, wouldn't want to use it for anything serious. Oh yeah, it is incomprehensable without the manual.
Sub £350 TC Electronic M1XL Superb, wouldn't consider much else. Better than the equivalent Lexicons. Build quality not so hot but it dos sound superb
Delay Unit TC Electronic D2 Fast becoming the PA industry standard. Great piece of kit.
Sub £1000 Yamaha SPX2000 Superb, tried and tested format, tough as nails. Sounds great. This series is so good that old SPX990s are still going for over £400 second hand! Persoally I'd buy a TC M1XL instead.
