I've just started getting back into the PA field after over 20 years out of it actually earning a living! I'm returning mainly as a hobby, but also to help my son's band and other youngsters.
I bought a pile of gear second hand & we've got most of it to work well with a bit of TLC and a soldering iron! My problem is with a Peavey PV1200 power amp which I use to power the subs (EV 15" Drivers in custom cabinets) - no matter which order I switch the system down I get the most ear-shattering pop on power down! Is this normal with this amp? I have owned a couple of Peavey amps before, but can't remember them ever doing this.
My feeling is it is a Power Supply/Capacitor problem, and if so would a service sort it out?
Does anyone know?

its a rather small amp for bass duties anyway, but if it pops when the pots are at minimum, then its probs a problem with the protection circuits/softstart relays...
old amp, if there is a problem, id just go get something a bit better n new!
best of luck, Pat

The amp seams to cope well with Bass if I run it Bridged - plenty of power for kids bands practising, but if it's faulty I'll probably replace it soon then, 2 of us are going to PLASA in September to look at new kit as we want to put a new rig together anyway- not too big, just nice- we can allways hire big stuff if we need it.
Used some Crown i-Tech's at a big gig in June and they were SUPERB, but I don't think I'd give them to kids to practise with!

i assume you run it bridge on two 8ohm bins, so its running into a 4ohm parrellel load. that would appear to the stereo modules as 2ohm loading per side. that is below amp ratings, and would kill it. as they are built like tanks, you may have got away with it for a long time.
when you going to plasa? im heading down sunday.

OOPs - I mis-read the Amp's operating manual - I've just re-read it and it does go to 2ohms per side stereo, but only 4ohms in Bridge Mode.
Don't know yet what day we're going to PLASA - both of us are self-employed with day jobs and have to organise these first before we book the flights.

you could simply unplug your speakers if your are worried about damage.

In my experience, you know it's a Peavey when you hear the legendary bang on power off. My Studiomaster 1200D doesn't do it. Any peavey (PA or Bass) I've had bang on the on/off. I agree with pulling the speaker first.

I use a PV1400 for my mid-highs, but it used to be used for the whole system before I split it up with the active crossover.
I had no problems, it has had a hammering and red lights all the way! Reds come on about 4db before clipping but I think the peaveys are tad more sensative.
But still no actual problems, pops, bangs etc.. Mine seems solid.

...yeah peaveys tend to do this, the metering is next to useless on them. its when you see the limit lights go on that you should think about turning it down a bit
