Hello
i'm doing a show in a theatre next month and need advice. a couple of the singers have powerful top end sound but when required to sing low notes they really struggle and needs boosting to get to the same volume as the rest of their singing. how to do this? i'm still specking up the pa at the mo and thaught of a few things. 1, multiband compressor to compress and increase the level of the bass range only? 2, compressor with eq sidechaned, which would be like having a mb comp 3, riding eq and vca's which i dont want to do with another 17 radio packs as well
i mainly do bands which generally the singers are not too bad, but this actor cant reach the low notes too well. any thaughts thanks

Could try bringing a couple of SM87 condenser mikes with you - that may help with the vocals - or even grab a focusrite mike-pre off of someone and use that - i have had similar problems with weak singers - i end up having to back everything else off in order to let them through the mix, but that does obviosuly notice a bit when the rest of the gigs been quite loud.
Convince the singer(s) to get those particular songs out of the way perhaps say at the start of the set, ofr bung them in after the interval, when everyones ears have recovered a bit.

its a musical in a theatre i'm doing so i cant change the order of songs, and they insist on radio packs. i'm using dpa mics with ev transmitters to hopefully a midas verona or bigger, if not then allen & grief ml. in practices a couple of them are powerful in their normal friequencies of singing, but struggle to have the same power on low notes. i havent been able to try, but using a mic pre would just be the same as using eq on the desk? maybe i should try 2 different channels eq'd up differently for acting and singing, and a multiband compressor over the channels also. i'm running 18 radio mics as well as a live band so dont want to have to ride faders etc too much. i wish i could get hold of an xl8 but sadly it looks i'm going completely analogue for the show

yes thats a good plan - send the offending vocal back through two channels and set them differently, that could be the best bet - you'll have to be on the ball though! (no wandering off to the toilet!!)

That does sound like a good plan. Of course you are also increasing your channel count which on top of your 18 clean channels you also have a band and fx returns etc. etc. You could end up needing a 48 channel board at that rate! Also extreme eq with 18 dpas on the go isnt ideal either. I know this might sound stupid but have you tried simply repositioning the mics? Try moving them closer to the mouth, whilst of course avoiding popping etc, half an inch with any type of lav system really does make a huge difference as that type of mic sadly can sound thin at the best of times. The best bet is to definitely somehow try to get a fuller sounding signal into the mic rather than trying to artificially correct the problem at the other end of the multi. It will sound a million times better.

If you are using DPA's, see if they will go for 4088's (or 4066's). You will get excellent level and they are fairly discrete, although obviously not as much as a headworn 4060.

if i can get dpa they would be the 4065/4066 design, but its getting to the stage saying why do we need to spend all this money, it looks as though i'm moving down to sennheiser radio packs now, which will sound fine, just will be able to see them alot more. (always the way), and was expecting at least 35 channels used. we're doing we will rock you with the band on stage. so far its been great fun in rehersals. i will have to get some pics on here with what equipment i'm left with, hopefully not too much behringer. i really havent got on with their stuff in the past.
