I have used the Soundcraft Si and most Yamaha desks, and I think it is fair to say that the Soundcraft sounds better but the Yamahas are much more the industry standard. I don't know how many visiting engineers you have but everyone seems to know how to use Yamaha desks. Just a thought.

You chaps might be interested to know that Yamaha UK do training for their digital desks. It is free, which is always my favourite price. If you contact them in Milton Keynes, 01908 366700 they should be able to help. I am going Next Wednesday. Enjoy.

You might find these links useful www.dpamicrophones.com/en/Mic-University.aspxwww.schoeps.de/showroom/Obviously they talk about their own microphones, but it should help in your choice of technique. The Schoeps site is particularly clear in the differences of sound you get from mic placement on a piano. The DPA site has lots of useful information about different stereo methods. My personal inclination would be towards the NT55's. I think a little research into acoustic treatment would be useful too. Even something cheap and simple such as putting a set of curtains up on a blank wall can really help to tame a room. This www.seelectronics.com/PSRF.html might be helpful too. I use the Reflexion filter Pro for voice-over recordings and find it very useful. Although if you are looking for a natural sound then loose mic techniques in a room with a good acoustic are the way to go, such as the AB placement on the Schoeps site. A friend of mine has created a very passable recording booth out cheap duvets over a wooden frame. Perhaps with some experimentation you might be able to change your room acoustic more into the direction of 'nice'?

Did anybody see any new and exciting noise toys at Plasa? I must admit I didn't, although it was nice to bump into old chums again.

I just had the pleasure of working at Brecon Jazz Festival. I was doing the Cathedral venue. It could have been a complete 'mare but, luckily, all the acts "got" the idea of me treating it like an acoustic gig and just reinforcing what they were doing. The cathedral has a lovely, but very big, reverb, there was no possibility of overcoming it so it had to be used as a benefit instead. I had six Meyer UPJ on sticks, a couple of UPM frontfills and some AE10 subs (yuk!), and a Heritage 1000 out front. A soupcon of Smaart a dash of Gallileo and it was a beautiful thing.

Anybody out there know much about these? www.schertlerusa.com/dyn.htmI had to use a pair on a piano recently and was very unhappy with the sound. I have heard they can be good and I am guessing it was to do with how and where they were positioned on the piano. I was trapped at FOH on a very kick-bollock-scramble outdoor gig and did not even see the fitting, let alone influence it. Not that I would have known what I was doing anyway! There was level for days due to them being contact mics, which is nice, but I would rather have had a Helpinstill. Any thoughts or advice would be gratefully received.

I have had a chat with Nick Pemberton from Yamaha UK and it turns out that the little 9 pin link cable between the two cards was the problem. There was nothing wrong with the snake itself or the cards or the stage box. It was just this link cable not sending data from one card to the other consistently, thus indicating a fault where was none. Now I know......

Anyone out the familiar with Yamaha digital snakes? I was using one recently with an M7CL and had an indicated problem which I did not understand. Every so often a warning came up saying "Connection with head amps lost". The desk seemed to be OK and there was no loss of signal (although I was not using phantom at the time) but if I looked at the head amp page under 'Racks' the little red 48v indicators had greyed out. Then warning would go off and all would be well again. The snake was set up in redundant mode, so I doubt it was the cable. Any thoughts?

I worked on the "Silver Wind" about 12 years ago. It is a very interesting thing to do and quite a different working environment, no rigs and derigs for one thing, apart from pool parties. Very good job and a great way to save money as you are paid tax free in international waters. Have a look at an off shore dollar account somewhere as you get paid in dollars. Enjoy. ;D

Failing that, does anyone know the specs of the original so that I can find a substitute?

I have been given a Behringer Eurorack MX 1604A. The drawback being that it has no PSU. Behringer don't seem to do one. Has anyone any clues as to where I could look for a replacement? Ta.
