Hi all, I think it's about time I that I purchased a bigger FOH desk.
I am very happy with the Mackie Onyx 1640 and will continue to use it in my studio for live recordings, but I need more channels.
Using the Mackie CFX16 mkII as a submixer for Keys is OK, but it restricts monitoring for other types of input.
I have been interested in the Mackie Onyx 32.4, as it has the same pre's, Perkins EQ, 6x aux sends and channel metering as the 1640, but with addition features and channels.
Are these still as reliable these days and where should I source one from? Any other recommendations? Cheers, John.

Hi
We use both dependent on the gig, for quality I prefer analog. Digital does give a lot in a box but at the lower end of the market there is a perceptable difference .

Hi Ian. I prefer analog as i'm an old school. Tried digital desks but its too light in body (sound wise). I prefer my old Soundcraft 24/8/2 (2 of them in tandem) for main PA and a Soundcraft 16/4/4 for monitor. Been to the bike meet in Chinnor and it sounded ok. You can pick up a refurb analog desk for not too much pesos if you spead the word youre looking for one.
Robin.

I think that's a good choice, Midas still make good desks and are acceptable for most engineers.

I set up my new Midas Venice F-32, in the base of it's Thon roadcase in my studio. I have had to re-design the build of my 6' and 4' DJ stands, so that they are bolted together in parallel, to take the weight and size of the desk and outboard rack. No longer any need for re-enforcing bars and out-riggers. It's also nice to have cable management at last.
I will be trying out the FireWire output on Saturday, to see if my old iMac and Tracktion 3 software can handle the output from the desk. I will not be using it's full 32/32 in/out capabilities for this test, so hopefully it will be OK, before my next upgrade. Cheers, John.

Unfortunately, the Firewire driver for the Midas Venice F-32 is not compatible with my Tiger OS and requires at least Snow Leopard.
My old iMac is not up to the latest requirements, so I will have to get a new one, then upgrade to Tracktion 4.
Andy Lee is buying my old iMac and flight case off me, so at least it will not be a massive upgrade cost.

I used my new Midas Venice F-32 at The Boom Boom Club, (Sutton United Football Club's live music venue, promoted by Pete Feenstra), on Saturday 25th, May, for a gig with Cloudbusting. They are a superb Kate Bush tribute band.
Both the band and I were very impressed with the sound (and my LED stage lighting) and I will now be their first choice for future gigs around my area.
I use 2x multicores and a heavily wired FOH outboard rack, but the covered cable management of the Thon roadcase easily accommodated all of the linking snakes and cabling.
Definitely a 2 man lift. Cheers, John.

I should have my new 27" iMac this Thursday.
I already have everything else I need to connect it up, so I should be able to get Tracktion 4 loaded, the new firewire driver loaded and connect it up to my Midas Venice F-32.
I will try some tracking in the studio during the week and hopefully if all goes well, I will be able to record a demo for one of the bands that are lined-up waiting.
