Hi folks, My experience is with small systems banging on a Bass guitar. I am wondering if I am being picky, but at a local small venue with a house PA I was perplexed by the sound. (I couldn,t observe much, but there were two flown 15"+horn cabs and two large Sub boxes in the corner). First time I was there, I had to get out as every time the drummer hit the kick, my liver did a back-flip, not to mention what my kidneys did. I concluded then that the desk jockey needed some training. I was there this weekend, two guys with acoustic guitars, while a lovely tone, again an incredible sub-wave was tickling my danglies. I felt more comfortable 5M from the FOH at a Quo gig!! Am I just a boring old fart, or should I tell the pub to get rid of the git and hire me? I think he is putting too much power to the subs (2 side by side in a room 4-6M deep by 8-10m wide). Any views on this?

Is the sound the same throughout the venue, or just in certain areas? It may be that the FOH position is in an area where the bass is seriously dipping. Also having subs in the corner is not a good idea, as some low frequencies will be seriously enhanced.
I have been in a venue, in the audience, at the back of the stalls at a Garry Moore gig, where the kick drum made me feel sick.
John.

Pub has two parts. The Pit (as I described) where the stage looks across the short end. There looks to be accousticy stuff in the ceiling to deflect and direct sound. I was standing on a gallery raised 18 inches My head close to the ceiling. I use a Wharfedale 15B in a larger room and it is more than enough at 150W!! When I was in the other part up the stairs and through, I was getting my danglies tickled there too. (that's where the wave hit and hard). I may have a chance of playing their myself, and I wouldn't want anyone to be ill because of my Trace-Elliot shaped low B!! I played with a sound like that once and boy did it throw me off playing. I think I'll show the tech what the 75Hz cut button is for!!!!
