Just out of interest who uses these?
We used 18 of these for the last festival we did (lounge on the farm) in canterbury... Seemed to go down really well and recieved compliments from the likes of the egg, nizlopi etc.
Oh and we're using carlsbro 400/15... basically a bi-amped cab.
Gonna get two of my own just for the sake of small gigs, fed up of having to setup a seperate rack etc.

Nice idea...active monitors. No amp racks , no extra speaker cables...BUT
1) The cheaper ones come with a crappy eq on the side which if you don`t gaffer down WILL get kicked mid-gig causing untold feedback! 2) The cheaper ones come with on/ off switches that aren`t recessed or on the far side of the box, so they WILL get kicked off mid gig...more gaffer or bypass `em! 3) The cheaper ones ...etc etc!
I have used carlsbro ones before at smaller gigs , not too bad but the step up to a self powered, full dsp 2 way monitor is a big jump!
.p.

Yeah they're not the cheaper range ones... they're the GAMMA's. So pretty neat sounding etc. =)

mackie srm450's make a good little monitor - not a big lover of powered wedges myself but...these will do nicely AND you can use them as FOH if your system crashes - get u out of trouble.
My monitors A.s.s. can be pole mounted and i use them for small gigs but run them off of a McGregor 600w a side mixer-amp.

I vote for Martin LE400 wedges. You can buy them second hand for about £350. 600 watt 15" and horn and you can jump up on them all day long. They will withstand years of abuse unlike Mackie SRM450s, JBL eons, EV sx s and all other manner of compromised wedge speakers.
Wish list when buying a monitor:
1 will it break when the lead singer of (insert your favourite headonistic rock band here) stands on it to get some extra height when he stage dives?
2 will the grille prevent cigarettes, beer etc from coating the diaphragms on both the low / mid and horn drivers? Eon SRM 450 and SX all fail on this one.
3 are replacement parts readily and cheaply available and easy to fit (the JBL eon is a cast iron pregnant dog in the fitting department.
4 Will they go loud enough to scare the nuts out of a drum and bass MC without feeding back?
5 Will they still be just as good in 10 years time?
6 will they grow with me as I grow (LE 400s can be run active - I mean biamping not putting a dodgy amplifier inside it.)
I also vote for
Logic Systems - good wedges but the replacement parts are expensive
Nexo PS15 - lovely
Opus MP550 - If only I could use them every where I go
D&B Max - this is what a stage monitor is meant to be like.

Thanks Simon and Jim! Only problem is the band can't afford £450 each for the Mackies, kinda thinking cheaper than that. Say we have up to about £200 a monitor. Has to be active, no way can they afford another amp! Currently they have 2 500W subs and 2 400W full range running off a 600W amp... Looking at a 1500W amp on ebay though, so if that happens we might have the 600W to use for monitors. Gotta see what happens anyway! Thanks guys

After using 450s for over 2 years I wouldn't recommend them for monitors. But they do make a great practice room speaker.
there great for nice quite bands but get some metal band which like everything loud and they just overheat after 10 mins or so. this is due to the heat sink being on the bottom of them in wedge mode. they do have a handy bass cut on them but thats about it. the horns are expensive to replace to and not easy to do yourself. Ohh and Kick drum is a no no to.
I would go for the 15 inch wharfedale active wedges any day. they also do a 12inch version that I have heard good things about. If needed on a budget you could just buy one and piggyback a passive monitor off the output too.

funnily enough im doing an install for a guy locally and the wharfedales came up in the convo - my mates doing them at a reasonable price, more than enough beef for a little venue

Ok, I'm back again... I probably ask far too many questions around here but I'm a complete newby. Guess what... now the band want passive mons 600W amp for mons. All this is hopefully going into a practise / recording room, so if that doesn't happen all this will probably be meaningless. Anyway, where can I find these Wharfdale mons? We need a pair of mons, hopefully less than £200 each. Thanks again guys, appreciated. PS: Does anyone know how to put a Behringer FX unit through a Soundcraft Spirit Studio? I think the signal goes from the group output to the fx, then back into the FX L and R ports and out the main mix. Is this right? The gear isn't here, just trying to work out what cables we need!
